Who We Are

The League of Kenya Women Voters (LKWV) popularly known in Kenya as ‘The League’ , is a national non-partisan political women’s membership organization founded in 1992 by a voluntary group of like minded Kenyan women to advance the rights of women in elective political leadership and other positions of decision making. The League is a Non – governmental membership organization registered as an association under the societies Act, Cap 108 laws of Kenya.

Our Mission

To promote women’s active, and equal participation in politics and public affairs through the electoral process as voters and leaders.

Our Vision

A democratic Kenya where women are adequately and effectively empowered, recognized for political, social and economical contributions.

Our goal is to enhance civic participation of women in the electoral process through voter education and enhance civic competence in the entire electoral chain.

The League Leadership

Hon. Alice Muthoni Wahome is the current Chairperson of The League of Kenya Women Voters. She was elected into the office as Chairperson after serving as a Director for over five years. She holds an LLB. University of Nairobi (1980 – 1984), Dip. Law Kenya School of Law (1984 – 1985) and Diploma Teaching and Training 2003. In March 2013, Hon. Alice Wahome was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kandara Constituency as one of only sixteen female legislators elected from 290 dual gender constituencies in the country.
Hon. Alice Wahome has previously served as a Board Member of Kenya League of Women Voters where she has assisted in voter and civic education targeted at enhancing awareness in the electoral process, combating violence during elections, need to vote, how to vote, and right to vote, and involving participation of the people in the political process as part of democratization. Hon. Alice has wide experience in gender awareness advocacy, training, and teaching education in women rights and human rights. She served in the Chief Justice Committee that was instrumental in the establishment of the Family Court in Kenya. Alice has been engaged in the research, drafting and advocacy work of the Equality Bill, Family Protection (Domestic Violence) Bill and Affirmative Action Bill.
